                                                                                           LAB TOOL-40

The LabTool-40S is our latest programmer aimed at customers that need the speed and portability of LabTool-48, but don't need to program the wide range of devices available on the LabTool-48, and want to save a little cash in the process.

If you only need a programmer to do the "basics" (EPROMS, 87C51 Family Micros, and FLASHS), the LabTool-40S is a good choice. Please note, however, that due to it's low cost, the LabTool-40S is limited to only these basic devices.. If you need a programmer that supports more sophisticated devices, try our LabTool-48 unit.

Features

Speed

The LabTool-40S uses the same parallel port I/O scheme as our LabTool-48 programmer, for extremely fast communication, eliminating download times entirely.

Portability

The LabTool-40S is extremely portable. It does not occupy a bus card in your PC so that you can pack it up and take it with you anytime you wish. At only 1.5" x 5" x 8", with a 2" high power transformer, the LabTool-40S fits into a briefcase or toolbox with ease. The programmer, parallel cable, transformer, and Family Modules, together weigh less than two pounds

Low Price

Without sacrificing speed, reliability, or portability, a number of design changes were made in order to lower the cost (and therefore the price) of the LabTool-40S.
Most notably, restricting the number of supported devices to only the most popular ones allowed us to cut out the extraneous hardware; this is the bulk of the cost/price savings. Refer to the device list for details.
The LabTool-40S is software activated, which eliminates the need for a power switch. We found that most people do not program devices all the time. They usually unplug their programmers and store them away for some length of time, only to plug them again when a firmware change is needed. Thus, turning on a power switch was simply an extra step. We decided to have the software power up the programmer instead.
The LabTool-40S uses Family Modules to route power to the devices. This is a BIG cost saver. It lets us get by with a minimum number of very clean, precise pin drivers, instead of spending a lot of your money to drive every pin.

Family Modules

Family modules are not an entirely new idea. They have been used in other programmers from time to time, to inexpensively route rock-solid power and ground to the device. When you're programming devices fairly slow, then straight, slide-in connectors are just fine. However, the LabTool-40S programs at speeds near the theoretical maximums of some devices, so the digital signals traveling to the device must be crystal clear, and the power and ground lines to the device must be rock-solid. Slide-in connectors can experience noise problems and higher resistance.
The connectors that the LabTool-40S uses are the same snap-in SIMM connectors that you may have holding the DRAM in your PC. When the SIMM is snapped into connector, there is one pound of force pressing down on each and every pin. That's 30 pounds of force holding the Family module on the LabTool-40S. That's about the best connection you can get!
The purpose of Family modules is to allow us to use a few expensive, high quality pin drivers, instead of using a cheaper pin driver on each pin on the ZIF socket. This translates to cleaner, more manageable waveforms, at a much lower price.

Reliability

  • The LabTool-40S has an 1 year warranty on all parts and labor
  • The LabTool-40S is static-protected at the ZIF Socket, Family Module socket, parallel port, and power connector. The static protection on the parallel port also protects the parallel port on the LabTool-40S from the 12 volts of a serial port.
  • Its case is made of tough 125" thick ABS plastic.
  • CE compliant, for sale into the European Community.
